Pink Narcissus Blooming
for three voices (SSA), alto saxophone, harp, violin, cello, and electronics
2023
[15 minutes]
First performed by students of the Royal Academy of Music in May 2023 at the Angela Burgess Recital Hall, Royal Academy of Music.
Pink Narcissus Blooming splits the ensemble into three independent groups that cue each other in a complex game of listening and playing. The first movement takes Lady Macbeth’s ‘unsex me here’ monologue and, in the second movement, connects it to the contemporary phenomenon of ‘sissification hypnosis.’ In the third movement, the ensemble comes together with a conductor, with text taken from Shakespeare’s Sonnet 20.
